No- the money is not yours! You have to pay the body shop for the repairs- or they will not let you have your car back. And usually the way insurance works- they sent you a check for $1000 toward the $1500 repairs and the other $500 (deductible) has to be paid by you. And no body shop that I know of will let you have your car back, until the bill is paid in full.

Technically yes it is your money. Let’s say they sent you a check for $2,000 and the repairs only cost $1,200; then you keep the $800. If they only sent you a check for what your repairs cost you can just sign the check over to the body shop. You do still have to pay the body shop obviously, but the money they sent you is yours to with what you please. If you decided not to have the work done then you could keep it all legally.

Weird. Usually they pay the shop. This is your money to pay the mechanic with.
